The OCA Treatment

Our sessions include a dynamic mix of many modalities custom tailored to fit each patient’s individual needs.

What to Expect

  • Before

Please be sure to eat before coming in to get Acupuncture, which dilates your blood vessels thereby lowering your blood pressure.

Bring or wear shorts (and a sports bra for women) so that we can easily access your limbs and joints for treatment, and so we can take Postural Assessment photos on your first visit if that applies to your case.

Please note that OCA is a fragrance-free space. Please do not wear any perfume, cologne, scented lotion or hair products to your appointment.

  • During

We use very thin needles (.16mm-.22mm thick) so you normally won’t even feel them. When we are doing Orthopedic/Sports Acupuncture your muscles might twitch, as they are triggered into resetting themselves, which often leads to a dull, full, and heavy feeling.

After the needles are in, you will be resting on the table for 20-45 minutes in a supine (face up), prone (face down), or lateral recumbent (on your side) position. You will have a buzzer so that you can call your practitioner, if you need, while you’re alone in the room.

If appropriate, and depending on your practitioner, you may receive TuiNa, PRT, Cupping, Guasha, Pachi-Pachi, Moxibustion, Wire Brush massage, or Hypervolt percussive massage in addition to the needles.

  • After

Post treatment you might feel an array of sensations. The most common one is a ‘dreamy’ feeling that comes from the deep calm of the CNS (central nervous system). You might also feel energized or sleepy, depending on the stress level of your body at the beginning of the treatment. Some people feel lightheaded after the treatment if they haven’t eaten anything. Many people feel hungry, as well as movement in the digestive tract and/or urinary bladder. And after Orthopedic/Sports Acupuncture you will likely be sore for 24-48 hours as the motor neurons of the muscles continue to reset.
